“Whakahiko i te oranga whānau – invigorate the wellbeing of whānau”

Our vision serves to identify the destination for our organisation, under the conceptual framework of a waka hourua (voyaging canoe). It acknowledges that there are many routes, different conditions and environs to chart our way through in getting to our destination. It serves to provide hope for the whanau it seeks to serve, and inspiration to those charged with crewing the waka hourua.

This will be achieved by ensuring that the system has in place the following core components:

  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi and health equity embedded in all parts of the reformed health system
  • Whānau voice consistently informing how health services are designed, delivered and measured
  • Mātauranga Māori set as the foundations of hauora Māori informing strategic direction and implementation
  • Māori partnership mechanisms seamlessly dispersed across the health system, by the organisation itself and through the important roles of Iwi Māori partnership Boards

In order to guide the culture, values, and behaviour expected of the health sector, Health New Zealand and Te Aka Whai Ora will work in partnership to embody Te Mauri o Rongo – the NZ Health Charter. Te Mauri o Rongo guides how we relate to each other and serve our whānau and communities, to continually improve health outcomes and build towards pae ora.

Our team is committed to better health outcomes for Māori. Our purpose is woven into our work, and we thrive in a strong relationship-based environment underpinned by mātauranga Māori and whānau.
