The Nelson Marlborough region is located at the top of the South Island of New Zealand and geographically, near the center of New Zealand, with Nelson being the northernmost part of the region and Murchison in the south.
Sunny Nelson is known as the sunniest place in New Zealand, famous for its spectacular natural environment. Picton is renowned for stunning scenic bays, fishing spots, boutique accommodations and water sports. Blenheim has the largest wine-growing area in the country, the hub of the famous Marlborough wine district.

Nelson and Wairau (Blenheim) are the main hospitals. Our regional services support all parts of the community. We focus on building teams; and practice environments that retain, grow, enable, and extend the workforce.
The Nelson Marlborough region has two other hospitals as part of our organisation, these are:
- Alexandra Hospital has two main services Older Persons Mental Health – Community, and Older Persons Mental Health Admissions Unit and cares for people with conditions related to Dementia and mental health decline requiring a short stay for assessment and referring to aged residential care or a support service.
- Murchison Hospital provides specialised staff to respond to accidents and emergencies via 111. It has a 6-bed aged care facility and offers a Health Centre for general practitioner clinics.

- Nbus operates routes from the Nelson city centre to outer suburbs and InterCity offers buses to and from Picton via Nelson.
- Catch the InterIslander ferry to and from Picton which offers frequent sailings daily; Also, water taxis from Picton to any destination in the Queen Charlotte Sound.
- Taxis, shuttles, rental vehicles and other ride sharing services are also available in Nelson, Picton and Blenheim.

When you arrive
You may consider booking short-term accommodation ahead of your arrival, then search for long-term accommodation when you arrive. The cost and availability of short-term accommodation varies widely throughout the year. It can be affected by tourism peak season, university start dates and school holidays, to name a few. Please familiarise yourself with the city and view available long-term accommodation to ensure it suits your preferences. Several considerations to make are proximity to the workplace, availability of nearby schools for the kids, and the ideal size of the property. Some may also find that flatting would be a more suitable arrangement.

Nurse Entry to Practice (NetP) programme
Our 'Nurse Entry to Practice" (NetP) programme places new graduate nurses in our workplaces.
Graduates will enjoy a safe learning environment to support the transition from an advanced beginner to a competent registered nurse.
The range of placements available
NetP placements are offered in Nelson and Blenheim for both secondary services and primary health. We try to place people according to their clinical interests.
Secondary service placement areas include: Medical, surgical assessment treatment and rehabilitation, perioperative, emergency department, and radiology.
Primary care placements areas include: Māori health provider, hospice, aged care and a mixed rural nursing experience at Murchison Community Hospital.

- Situated learning in your clinical setting with enthusiastic preceptors and nurse educators
- Comprehensive orientation to NMH or NetP partner organisation
- Ongoing support from formally prepared preceptors who understand and apply principles of adult learning
- 12 study days including a level 7 graduate certificate course delivered by ARA Institute in Nelson

Programme outcomes
Successful NetP programme graduates will be certified to practice safely, confidently and competently within the registered nurse scope of practice.
This is certified under the South Island Regional Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP).
Successful completion of the programme is achieved through:
- a minimum of 1300 hours of clinical practice
- completion of a required unit or induction packages
- minimum 85% attendance at study days
- completion of the required unit or core requirements eg emergency procedures, smoking cessation, IV skills competence
- setting and achieving goals with support from your preceptor
- completion of the level 7 Graduate Certificate Rapid Assessment course
- presentation to peers of a care pathway analysis using principles of adult learning and peer assessment skills
- passing a policy critique assignment
- providing evidence of effective use of development time
- completion of a performance appraisal with your preceptor and nurse manager
- submitting a professional portfolio for competent status to the South Island Regional PDRP.
Eligibility criteria
At the time of application, applicants must:
- hold a nursing degree from a New Zealand nursing programme approved by Nursing Council New Zealand
- hold New Zealand nursing registration within the registered nurse scope of practice
- hold a current annual practising certificate that enables full participation in the programme
- have graduated within the past 24 months and have not practised as a registered nurse for longer than six months
- be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident

Nursing Entry to Specialist Practice (NeSP) programme
The 'nurse entry to specialist practice' (NeSP) programme provides a safe, supported environment in which a graduate nurse can transition to mental health nursing practice.
The programme is approved by Nursing Council New Zealand and funded by Te Pou Mental Health Workforce Development (Te Pou).

- programme focus: Whitireia Polytechnic Postgraduate Certificate Entry to Specialty Practice (Mental Health)

Midwifery education for students and workforce
We offer a wide range of education and training opportunities to both students and current midwives.
Bachelor of Midwifery
We have a contract with the Ara Institute of Canterbury to provide the Bachelor of Midwifery satellite programme.
Midwifery First Year of Practice (MFYP)
We have MFYP fixed-term positions in the core midwifery teams at Nelson and Wairau maternity units and also support lead maternity carers completing their MFYP programme.
Midwifery education
Education days and workshops are provided free of charge to all registered midwives in the Nelson Marlborough region.
If you are a Nelson Marlborough employee you can book courses through your HR Kiosk. If you are self-employed please book directly with Samantha Tsironis.
Postgraduate education
Midwives can access postgraduate education at four teaching institutes nationwide. Midwives who meet eligibility criteria can also apply for Health Workforce NZ funding to support their ongoing education.
Midwifery complex care programme
We support core midwives who meet the eligibility criteria to apply for the national midwifery complex care programme.
This is a postgraduate-level programme where midwives can develop their knowledge and skills in specific areas of practice such as diabetes or pregnancy complications.
Self-employed midwives are invited to apply and would be supported by Health New Zealand- Nelson Marlborough, as required.
Allied Health Scientific & Technical careers
The Allied Health Scientific & Technical (AHST) services in Nelson Marlborough provide specialised clinical and technical support to patients, multidisciplinary teams and the wider community.

Anaesthetic Technicians
As a registered Anaesthetic Technician working in Nelson, you would be part of a small but dedicated team. We offer a safe and positive learning environment for students as well as a supportive environment for those looking to further their careers. To work as an Anaesthetic Technician, you will attend AUT and complete the Bachelor of Health Science in Perioperative Practice. For those already qualified we offer simulation training in situ as well as encourage our team to attend courses and conferences across New Zealand.
Registered Anaesthetic Technicians are highly trained in the wide range of technology used for the induction, maintenance, emergence, and monitoring of anaesthesia. We work across the whole hospital providing a high level of care.
Being a registered Anaesthetic Technician is a diverse role. It changes depending on the needs of the patient, the Anaesthetist, the Surgeon, the type of surgery and the situations that can occur throughout an operation. The role of the registered Anaesthetic Technician is a mixture of routine and quick, flexible thinking. Every day, registered Anaesthetic Technicians are responsible for ensuring any equipment needed for a patient, including the anaesthetic machine, is safe, functional, and available.
On occasions, Registered Anaesthetic Technicians must act quickly and knowledgeably to react to unexpected life-threatening events that can occur suddenly. Registered Anaesthetic Technicians must also react to anticipated events. In these situations, the role diversifies according to what the anaesthetist and situation require to help save a patient’s life.
The registered Anaesthetic Technician interacts with patients before surgery offering support and reassurance. The role involves empathy and sympathy in acting as the patient advocate. Registered anaesthetic technicians care for patients from a wide range of ages, cultures, and medical statuses, from a baby needing minor ear surgery, to a 90-year-old requiring major hip surgery.
The registered Anaesthetic Technician is an important part of the operating team, working closely with Anaesthetists and the intraoperative team to create a safe environment for every patient as well as colleagues. Audiology/Mātai Ororongo
We are a small and friendly team of Audiologists/Kaimātai Ororongo based at Nelson and Wairau hospital. We work mostly with tamariki (children), rangitahi (young people) and their whānau (family) to provide a full range of hearing testing and hearing (re)habilitation, including the fitting of hearing devices. We work closely with Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialists, Paediatricians, Ministry of Education specialists and vision and hearing screeners.
Our team offers ongoing professional development opportunities, support and training required for the New Zealand Audiological Society (NZAS) certification of clinical competency and paediatric sub-specialties, so you can work independently, as well as collaboratively as a member of our team.
Audiology/Mātai Ororongo is an incredibly rewarding profession for those who enjoy working with technology and are passionate in making a difference in someone’s quality of life.

Occupational Therapy/Whakaora ngangahau
Our Occupational Therapy teams are a dynamic group of dedicated and skilled clinicians, supported by our skilled and experienced Kaiāwhina (Allied Health Assistants). We work from both our hospital sites at Nelson and Wairau as well as community-based services across the region.
The services we provide, range from the acute medical and surgical wards, inpatient & community rehabilitation, burns and scar management through to community based physical services, child development, wheelchair-seating and vocational rehabilitation interventions. We currently provide input into the local Palliative care services.
In mental health occupational therapists are part of the multi-disciplinary teams working right across the service including addictions, child and adolescent mental health, adult community and inpatient services, as well as our specialist service for older adults
Our teams are supported with a regular programme of in-services and supervision. There are opportunities to move between services and apply for fixed term projects such as those listed below.
Some of the exciting work we are involved with includes:
- Using the Calderdale framework to enable skill sharing in the hospital and community settings – becoming accredited to carry out some of the mobility tasks usually allocated to physiotherapy. We have been able to use the same Calderdale framework to delegate tasks with safety and confidence to our kaiāwhina (Allied Health assistants)
- Supporting occupation-based strategies for healthy lifestyles, building resilience and managing distress. (mental health)
- Supporting the rollout of sensory modulation strategies across the service. (mental health)
- Numerous quality improvement projects including; reducing seclusion and restraint, learning from adverse events and consumer, family and whānau experience, MD
- Improvement Project, Advanced Directive project, etc (mental health)
- Co-lead on ACC funded fixed term project to reduce pressure injuries across hospital and community settings
- One year project providing assessment & early intervention services for new neurology patients.

Physiotherapy
Our Physiotherapy teams are based at Nelson and Wairau hospitals, the Richmond Health Hub and community settings across the region. Working across the continuum of patient care, from Emergency Department (ED), inpatient settings, and outpatient clinics to supporting our people in the communities within which they live. This is a great place to hone your generalist skills while building your passion in a particular clinical area. We pride ourselves on our friendly, supportive and valued contribution to the multidisciplinary teams across primary and secondary health services. We are helped in our work by a group of empathetic, enthusiastic and experienced kaiāwhina (Allied Health Assistants).
We are a quality and innovation-focused service, striving at all times to ensure our patients are at the centre of all we do. The team are supported to engage in service improvements and initiatives. Recent Examples of quality improvement projects we have been a part of in recent years include:
- Submissions to the NMH Health Innovation Awards have been for a project introducing allied health practitioners in ED, showcasing the introduction of skill sharing in the Medical Admission and Planning unit.
- Recived the 2020 NMH Healthy Communities award for the work done by our in-home falls prevention team.
- The introduction and use of digital technology for our clinical documentation, patient interactions, including telehealth, and alternative communication methods
- The development and integration of kaiāwhina workforce opportunities across all clinical areas such as community rehab teams and inpatient units
- Development of pathways for elective surgeries
- Expanding upon the working relationships with aligned groups at Hospice and NASC (Needs Assessment and Coordination)

Speech Language Therapy/Kaiwhakatikatika reo korero
We are a small, friendly team of experienced Speech-Language Therapists supported by an energetic and experienced Kaiāwhina (Allied Health Assistant) workforce. Based at Nelson and Wairau hospitals plus our community health hub in Richmond, we provide a full range of communication and swallowing assessments, interventions and advice across inpatient, outpatient and community settings. The Child Development Team also includes Paediatric Speech-Language Therapists.
We provide regular in-service training and supervision opportunities with our team and the wider Allied Health Services. As part of our team you will work across the range of clinical services, enjoying a varied caseload and mix of inpatient, outpatient and community work. We have videofluoroscopy services at Nelson Hospital, and we are currently working towards introducing a FEES (fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) service to our hospitals.
