Health New Zealand - Counties Manukau
Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora – Counties Manukau has over 9,000 staff and provides patient and whānau centred care and services to more than half a million people in the district.
Middlemore Hospital hosts the National Burns Centre and is home to the Kidz First paediatric hospital, a birthing unit, Tiaho Mai acute mental health unit, a busy accident and emergency department and fully integrated ICU and advanced cardiac care units.
We offer a range of niche specialist regional and national services in orthopaedic and plastic surgery, burns, spinal injury rehabilitation, vascular surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, renal dialysis, and neonatal intensive care.
Our Manukau Health Park facility is based in South Auckland, providing specialist outpatient appointments and surgical services and is undergoing a large-scale redevelopment to increase services on offer.
We also have a range of sites including Botany SuperClinic (East Auckland), local hospitals such as Pukekohe Hospital and three community birthing units – Botany Downs, Papakura, and Pukekohe.
The Auckland Spinal Rehabilitaition Unit is based on Ōtara and we also have a range of community mental health services for adults and youth and rehabiliation services.

Middlemore Hospital
Middlemore Hospital is the largest hospital located in South Auckland region and an advanced tertiary hospital with medical and surgical facilities.
Patient and whānau centred care is at the heart of what we do and each year we treat nearly 100,000 inpatients and provide over 500,000 outpatient services to patients suffering from acute and chronic medical conditions.

Middlemore Hospital emergency department is home to one of the busiest emergency departments in the Southern Hemisphere. We have fully Integrated ICU and Advanced Cardiac Care Units as well as the Critical Care Complex (CCC) which is a training unit for doctors training in intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, emergency medicine as well as other specialties.
Middlemore Hospital has a birthing unit, maternity services, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) which provides Intensive Care (Level III) and Special Care (Level II) services.
Our Kidz First Children’s Hospital is a purpose-built family centred health care facility providing paediatric inpatient surgical care and acute paediatric medical services.
A separate facility onsite is Tiaho Mai, a residential support unit providing a 24-hour mental health treatment services for people with serious or complicated mental health concerns. It has been specially designed to support the cultural needs of our community.

Specialised Services
Counties Manukau is a varied and exciting place to work with sites and specialties based at Middlemore Hospital and at our other facilities based in the community.
We provide a range of niche specialist regional and national services in orthopaedic and plastic surgery, burns, spinal injury rehabilitation, vascular surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, renal dialysis, and neonatal intensive care.
Our Middlemore Hospital site hosts the National Burns Service, staffed by world class doctors, burn surgeons and specialists who were also an integral part of the Whakaari, White Island emergency response in 2019.
Our Plastic Reconstructive and Hand Surgery Service is one of the four regional plastic surgery centres in New Zealand and provides services to people who live in the Counties Manukau, Auckland, Waitemata and Northland areas.
The Auckland Spinal Rehabilitation Unit, based in Ōtara, is a supra-regional spinal injury rehabilitation service which provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary rehabilitation care for people with spinal cord impairment from the central North Island to the Far North.

Manukau Health Park redevelopment
Construction work at Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora’s $316m Manukau Health Park redevelopment started in February 2023.

Counties Manukau Health Services
Auckland Regional Plastic and Hand Reconstructive Centre
The Auckland Regional Plastic and Hand Reconstructive Centre is based at both Middlemore Hospital and Manukau Health Park. They provide both secondary and tertiary level care for the Northern Region for both adult and paediatric patients and servicing a population of 1.7 million.
Their subspecialty skill and expertise extend to: Cleft lip and palate care, Microtia, burns, head and neck surgery, micro breast reconstructions, Lymphoedema care, Melanoma, complex reconstructions for breast, chest, lower limb trauma and sarcoma reconstructions, Brachial Plexus and complex Tetraplegic Nerve and tendon transplant, congenital and complex hand surgeries with a team of specialised hand surgeons from both orthopaedic and plastic vocational training to provide the best care for patients.
They also have a purpose-built local plastic surgery suite unit named after the renowned Sir William Manchester.

Critical Care Complex - ICU and HDU
The Critical Care Complex (CCC) comprises of two closed Units, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
They provide specialised medical and nursing care to patients, both adult and paediatric, who are critically ill.
Both units are staffed by a team of highly experienced and professional doctors and nurses, who are supported by other allied healthcare professionals.
Critical Care Complex is a training unit for doctors training in intensive care medicine, anaesthesia, emergency medicine as well as other specialties.

Our modern laboratory services provide a comprehensive range of tests and services both at Middlemore Hospital and Manukau Health Park.
Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
Kidz First neonatal care provides intensive care (Level III) and special care (Level II) services and is an integral part of the continuum of services delivered by the Kidz First and women’s health divisions.
Manukau Super Clinic and Surgery Centre
Manukau Super Clinic and Manukau Surgery Centre sit within the new Manukau Health Park site which is undergoing a large expansion bringing more services and facilities into the site. The expansion project includes a new ambulatory renal care centre, new breast care and screening services, a standalone theatre block with four new theatres.

Primary birthing units
Botany Downs birthing unit
The Botany Downs birthing unit is a purpose-built facility located near the Botany Town Centre, that provides a quiet, pleasant environment.
The unit currently has five birthing rooms- two with labour pools, and postnatal accommodation. Approximately 400 women birth in this unit per year while 1500 women transfer from a base hospital for their postnatal stay.

Renal services
The Department of Renal Medicine at Middlemore Hospital offers comprehensive care for all aspects of renal disease including general nephrology, all dialysis modalities, in-patient care, out-patient treatment, and pre-transplant work up and post-transplant follow up.
Tiaho Mai — Mental health services
Tiaho Mai is a residential unit, supporting people with mental health problems during a crisis. They provide a 24-hour mental health treatment services for people with serious or complicated mental health concerns.
Tiaho Mai means ‘the light that comes from the moon and the stars - shine here’ in Te Reo Māori.
Nga Whetu Marama (translates to “the Bright Stars”) is a marae/whare situated alongside Tiaho Mai. It was named by the local Kaumatua and Kuia of Tainui.
As well as our Tiaho Mai, Acute Inpatient Mental Health Unit, we also deliver a range of community mental health and addictions services including Te Rawhiti, Matariki, Springs Road, Tamaki Oranga, Lambie Drive, Pukekohe Hospital, Awhinatia and the Koropiko Mental Health Services for Older People.

Around 15 minutes’ drive from Middlemore Hospital, you will find the Mangere Bridge Village sitting on the Manukau Harbour with Mangere Mountain and Ambury Park and farm as well as shops and cafes to enjoy. It is a lovely area if you want to live close to work at Middlemore Hospital.
The Auckland Airport is a 15–20-minute drive from Middlemore Hospital and nearby you can also find the Manawa Bay outlet shopping mall.
Manukau also boasts the Westfield Shopping Mall, Wero Whitewater Park, Rainbows End theme park and a variety of markets including night markets in different locations and the popular Otara and Clevedon markets.
Take a drive to our beautiful Pohutukawa Coast and spend your summer days at the stunning Maraetai or Omana beaches or go slightly further afield to beaches like Awhitu Peninsula known for its pristine beaches and breath-taking coastal views.
Auckland Botanical Gardens in Manurewa is beautiful place to stop for a coffee and a walk.
There are plenty of ways to get around Counties Manukau with trains, buses, taxis and ride-sharing.

- Purchase an Auckland Transport (AT) HOP card to travel on buses in and around Auckland.
- Auckland Transport runs the public bus services in Manukau district, but also Auckland-wide.
- Middlemore Hospital has a train station directly outside the hospital. View the train line routes here.
